A motorist died early Wednesday in an overturned BMW along westbound Interstate 8 in Lakeside.
A witness summoned authorities around 1:20 a.m. after seeing flames on the side of the freeway at a closed rest stop east of Lake Jennings Park Road, according to OnScene.TV. The person then noticed it was a car ablaze.
The driver of the BMW apparently left the freeway, went down an embankment and struck a tree. The vehicle landed upside down and caught fire.
The witness attempted to rescue the victim, but the doors to the BMW were locked.
Lakeside firefighters put out the fire, but could not save the victim. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal crash.
