Berhampur: Berhampur Police have arrested five persons for illegal betting on IPL matches, with four apprehended by Town Police Station and one by Baidyanathpur Police Station.
The arrests were made following intelligence inputs about online gambling activities linked to the recent Gujarat Titans vs. Mumbai Indians match.
The arrested persons are Brundaban Panigrahy (42), Laxminrusingha Sahi, Haridakhandi, BadaBazar PS; Ramakanta Samantara (42), Rangunibandha Street, currently at New Mengo Market, G.Nuagam PS; P. Santosh Kumar (40), Desibehera Street, BadaBazar PS; Muralidhar Biswal (40), New Khajuria, G.Nuagaon PS and Sridhar Sahu (26), Balakrishna Bada Danda Sahi, Sadar PS.
The police also seized six mobile phones, three two-wheelers, cash worth ₹70,000, and evidence of money transactions. Investigations revealed the accused used websites like Sky Exchange for betting, with chats and online money transfers found on their devices.
The concerned bank has been urged to freeze the suspects’ accounts. Further investigation is underway to trace additional accomplices and follow the money trail, informed Berhampur SP Dr. Saravana Vivek M.
