LANCASTER, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A fire that broke out Sunday afternoon at the Lancaster Walmart has been confirmed as arson, and a juvenile suspect is now in custody.
Emergency crews responded at 4:35 p.m. Sunday to the store on Hwy 9 Bypass. The building was evacuated, and firefighters had the blaze under control within ten minutes.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
By 10:00 p.m., investigators from the Lancaster Police Department, Lancaster Fire Department, SLED, and the Sixth Circuit Solicitor’s Office had identified and detained a juvenile suspect. A related vehicle was also located, police said.
Chief Don Roper commended the fast investigative work, stating, “We will not tolerate anyone placing the community in danger with criminal behavior.” Fire Chief Justin McLellan praised firefighters and Walmart staff for their quick action in minimizing damage and ensuring safety.
