The medical examiner’s office has publicly identified a 44-year-old man who was fatally injured over the weekend in a predawn East Village traffic crash involving a suspected drunk driver.
Robert Spittler of Coronado was heading south on 17th Street near San Diego City College when his vehicle was struck by an eastbound car at C Street shortly before 3:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Firefighters had to free Spittler, who was unconscious following the collision, from his damaged vehicle, police reported. Paramedics then took him to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The other motorist, a 21-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. His name has not been released.
