Rachel Reeves has hinted the UK will back down over its stance on youth mobility ahead of a crucial summit with the EU.
UK and EU officials will meet next month as part of Sir Keir Starmer’s Brexit reset. A youth mobility scheme has been a key demand from the EU nations as part of any Brexit, something the UK has rejected over fears it could spark a backlash over immigration.
Labour said last year it had “no plans for a youth mobility scheme” but as the UK looks to agree a post-Brexit deal, the Chancellor has signalled the Government may soften its stance.
Reeves told The Times: “We’re going to bring down net migration and we aren’t going to return to freedom of movement. But we are hosting the summit next month.
“We do want to see better trading relationships between our countries and we do want to enable young people from Europe and the UK to be able to work and travel overseas. But we’ve got to get the balance right, because I do not want to see net migration increasing. I want to see net migration falling.”
