AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department said 28 people were "exposed to a package with an unknown substance" inside a room at a southeast Austin IRS facility Friday afternoon.
Austin police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the call just after 1:30 p.m., when someone called to report that an employee opened a package containing the unknown substance, exposing others nearby.
Police said one person was evaluated at the scene and released and the substance did not seem to be hazardous. However, the Austin Fire Department Special Operations crew discovered a second package, prompting another room to be evacuated.
APD said the substance did not appear to be hazardous, but it was being sent for testing "out of an abundance of caution."
The building was secured and cleared, APD said just before 5 p.m.
The facility hosts U.S. Treasury Department offices, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) Austin’s IT Center, a childcare facility for federal workers, and an IRS service facility. The property was briefly on a Government Services Administration list of disposable properties earlier this year, as KXAN previously reported.
