Homeowners in three of the most environmentally desirable U.S. states — Hawaii, California and Oregon — face the highest housing cost burden in the country.
A study released Wednesday by the personal finance website WalletHub ranked the housing burden based on mortgage payments and energy costs.
The cost of housing as a share of median monthly household Income was 53.5% in Hawaii, 46.0% in California and 36.3% in Oregon.
The share in most states was between 20% and 30% of income, with Iowa ranking as the least burdensome at 18.9%.
“Hawaii has both the most-expensive mortgage (principal and interest) payments and the highest home energy costs in the country, solidifying its rank as the costliest state in our study,” WalletHub said.
Homeowners in California have the second-highest mortgage payments in the country and the ninth-highest home energy costs.
Energy and mortgage payments are lower in Oregon, but that state also has a considerably lower median household income.
