In a moment of solemnity during the glitz and roar of the IPL, Tuesday’s match between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium began with an air of mourning. The celebratory tone of the tournament was temporarily set aside to pay tribute to the victims of the terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir.
The BCCI, in a show of solidarity, ensured the players took the field wearing black armbands as a mark of respect. At the toss, Harsha Bhogle set the tone with a heartfelt tribute too.
Hardik, Cummins lead the way with words and gestures
Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya was visibly emotional during his post-toss remarks.
“(On the applause) Feels good, and as you mentioned, we would like to pass on our condolences (to the Pahalgam victims) and stand with them in this moment of grief. We, as a team, condemn this cowardly attack. We will bowl first,” said Hardik Pandya at the toss. He also divulged one change – Vignesh Puthur coming in for Ashwani Kumar.
His opposite number, Pat Cummins, also expressed solidarity, stating, “It has been heartbreaking for us as well, our thoughts are with the victims and their families.”
