Truly. Madly. Deeply. Painfully.
Darren Hayes’s voice was all over the ‘90s. As part of pop duo Savage Garden, Darren and producer Daniel Jones found massive success with songs like “I Want You,” “I Knew I Loved You,” and “Truly Madly Deeply” (“I wanna stand with you on a mountain / I wanna bathe with you in the sea.”)
That iconic voice was nearly silenced a month ago when Darren suffered a “terrible accident.”
In an April 18 Instagram post, Darren wrote that on March 17, a day after his mother passed away, he fainted and collapsed three times while getting out of bed. “The blunt force trauma was so severe it snapped my left jawbone in half,” he wrote. “I woke up in a pool of blood.”

Along with his shattered jawbone, nine of his teeth were completely obliterated. “I could have died if I landed in a different position,” he wrote, adding how he was lucky that he was found and rushed to St. John’s Providence in Santa Monica.
Darren underwent emergency reconstructive surgery, and doctors inserted a titanium brace to reconnect his jaw bones. His mouth was also wired shut for a minimum of eight weeks so his jaw could heal.
“Prior to the fall, I had been experiencing light-headedness and fainting spells for a period before this incident,” he explained. He also ruled out drugs or alcohol (“no judgment to those who partake but I do not”), and his doctors are still trying to find a cause.

Darren went public with this injury to explain why he’ll be out of action “for quite some time.” After his jaw heals, he will undergo physical therapy and rehabilitation. No singing until then.
“I love you folks. I’m so grateful to be alive and every day I’m getting stronger,” he added. “I’m almost one month post-surgery now, and I’m only just starting to feel better.”
Though he’s recently dealt with personal moments “of deep sadness,” Darren said he’s a “survivor and I’ll come back strong.”
