JUSTIN Thomas couldn’t help but get an emotional as he opened up on returning to the winner’s circle at the RBC Heritage last week.
Thomas, 31, claimed his first PGA Tour win since 2022 after beating Andrew Novak in a play-off at Harbour Towns Golf Links on Sunday.
The two-time major winner has been struggling to return to winning ways over the last three years, but finally got himself back amongst it – earning $3.6million dollars at the same time.
And Thomas opened up on just how hard it has been to top the leaderboard once again in an interview alongside his wife Jillian Wisniewski and their five-month-old daughter Molly Grace.
Speaking to CBS’ Amanda Balionis, he said: “Winning is hard. It’s really, really hard.
“I’ve worked my butt off and stayed patient, stayed positive.
“I got a great wife, great team and now a great daughter.”
Daughter Molly Grace was born in November 2024 and Thomas has managed to balance being a first-time dad with returning to form on Tour.
It comes after Thomas revealed that he doesn’t want his family involved in Netflix docu-series Full Swing.
Speaking on the Throwbacks podcast, he said: “Full Swing is interesting because it’s great, and we have gained a lot of fans because of it.
“But as somebody who is on it, I want to keep my personal life and my wife and family out of it. Obviously it’s their show, so they would rightfully love to film us.
“They would do anything I would allow, but for us personally I am like, ‘Hey guys, my wife does not need to sit down and do an interview. She does not want to. We want to keep this part of our life separate’.
“So once you get to a certain point, you get that I am not that interesting. I play golf 25 weeks of the year and when I’m not, I’m still practicing.”
Thomas, who shot a course record 10-under-par 61 in his opening round on Thursday, said that being amongst the winners again was “fun”.
He added: “I didn’t realise how much I missed winning and battling out there today was so much fun”.
It isn’t just Thomas’ family that has been there to support him through his three-year drought either.
In fact, the Ryder Cup star revealed that fellow pro Xander Schauffele had a big part to play in his RBC Heritage success, after he reached out to him for help with his putting.
He explained: “I called Xander at the end of last year because I think he’s one of the best putters in fundamentals, and not just putting but everything.
“And I was like, ‘Can I pick your brain for like two or three hours, just talk to you about putting?’
“So I was just talking to him about his process and how he reads greens and how he sees things and his practice and everything.
“And it honestly was just being with him, and he would kind of ask something, and I was like, ‘Yeah, I used to do that’.
“And then he was like, ‘Well, how about something like this?’.”
However, Schauffele claimed that Thomas was just being generous by giving him credit for his win.
He told the media: “I don’t really thing I have anything to do with him winning. He maybe gave me too much credit.
“But he was pretty up front and asked if I could kind of tag along for practice one day.”
