Nearly half of families facing childhood cancer experience transportation barriers that delay or prevent critical care, according to San Diego-based Emilio Nares Foundation.
The nonprofit aims to close that gap through its “Ride With Us” fundraising campaign, where a $100 donation covers the cost of one child’s ride to life-saving treatment.
Founded in 2003 by Mission Hills residents Diane and Richard Nares following the loss of their only son, Emilio, to cancer at age 5, ENF was created to provide financial and emotional support to families navigating a child’s serious medical diagnosis.
ENF’s goal is to raise $350,000 by May 23 to support families throughout Southern California facing childhood cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.
Funds from the campaign will benefit six core initiatives including Ride With Emilio, ENF’s flagship program that provides free transportation to medical appointments, as well as a food assistance program, mental health support, end-of-life care and nature-based healing activities.
“We are thrilled to launch the ‘Ride with Us’ campaign,” said Elsa Morales Roth, ENF’s executive director. “The need for our services is ever-present and we are committed to helping families through their toughest times.”
In 2024, ENF provided 2,521 rides, covering a total of 101,664 miles across San Diego County, supported more than 168 families through its resource center and delivered 2,600 snack bags to children receiving treatment at Rady Children’s Hospital.
The community can support the “Ride with Us” campaign by donating, starting a peer fundraiser or spreading the word using #RideWithUsENF, according to the nonprofit.
