Thousands of people took part in demonstrations Saturday across San Diego County, including 3,000 at a downtown rally and march.

Their concerns included possible violations of the Constitution, along with expressions of frustration with the Trump administration’s handling of the federal budget.

On Saturday morning, 50501 San Diego demonstrated at Waterfront Park, followed by a march to the Gaslamp Quarter to advocate “for constitutional protections and due process rights.”

The event featured speakers, live music and an open mic for participants, according to organizers.

Neil Patelaau of 50501 San Diego said that the rally and march were “about our right to free speech and supporting each other and community.

“It was incredible to see because everyone was there for different reasons, but that was reflective of democracy,” he told City News Service. He added that the concerns of those protesting ranged from the plight of Kilmar Abrego Garcia  – a Maryland resident mistakenly deported to El Salvador – to LGBTQ rights to demands that the courts and Congress maintain checks and balances in governance.

Shortly after 10 a.m. between 200 to 300 people had gathered at the park, Patelaau said. The organization had anticipated a turnout of about 1,000.

According to San Diego police, about three times that many participated in the rally and march, although the 3,000 figure was not official. There were no reported incidents.

Also on Saturday, Indivisible organized “Stop the Cuts” rallies at multiple locations in the county to demand accountability from elected officials about upcoming budget talks.

Rallies took place in Carlsbad, El Cajon, Encinitas, Escondido, Oceanside, San Marcos and Rancho Bernardo.

Richard Cannon of Indivisible told CNS that more than 1,000 people showed up for the rallies in Carlsbad and Encinitas, while over 300 participated in El Cajon and Escondido. Sixty people attended a rally in Ramona, “which is huge for a small town,” he said.

Rallies were also scheduled for Temecula in Riverside County, along with other cities nationwide.

Saturday’s activities follow actions two weeks ago, when more than 1,200 “Hands Off!” demonstrations were planned by 150 groups in San Diego and across the country, including civil rights organizations, labor unions, LBGTQ+ advocates, veterans and election activists.
