Pakistan hunt for new head coach after making Kirsten, Gillespie scapegoat, Javed uninterested

The Pakistan Cricket Board has advertised an invitation for applications to the head coach role position. Months after the side’s miserable run across formats and tournaments under interim coach Aaqib Javed, the board finally seems to have woken up from slumber. In 2024, both Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie were made scapegoats for Pakistan’s defeats and were ousted from their roles just months after they joined the team.

Pakistan wants new head coach

As per GeoSuper, the PCB is looking at a Level 3 qualified coach with 10 years of experience to be at the helm of the Pakistan team. The report claimed that Javed was no longer interested in the role of a head coach, and instead was eyeing to become the high-performance director.

Previously, Javed was given two tenure extensions by the PCB. One was until the end of ICC Champions Trophy and the other was till the end of the white-ball tour to New Zealand.

The report further claims that Pakistan is inclined to bring in a foreign international as head coach as the PCB is dealing with “limited national resources.”

However, sources have claimed that the PCB is not chasing “high-profile” individuals this time.

Gillespie was reportedly unhappy with being snubbed from the selection committee and hence decided to resign. The Australian decided to part ways with the team just 8 months after he was roped in as the red-ball coach.

Meanwhile, it took Kirsten just six months to part ways with the team after being roped in as white-ball coach.

Kirsten joined the Pakistan white-ball team in May. However, things didn’t start well. First, he suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of England, which was followed by a humiliating loss to the USA at the 2024 T20 World Cup and a group-stage elimination.
