Law enforcement agencies Saturday were responding to service disruptions for phone customers in San Diego County, some that affected 911 calls.

In some cases, the agencies asked that residents experiencing an emergency use regular phone numbers to seek aid.

The Oceanside Police Department warned on Saturday morning via X that “there is a service outage affecting some phone carriers in Southern California, which has disrupted 9-1-1 service. If you have an emergency and are not able to get through to 9-1-1, please call our non-emergency dispatch number, 760-435-4900.

The disruption was impacting multiple carriers in Southern California, including Verizon. An officer with the Oceanside police told City News Service that Verizon had restored service for the most part by midday Saturday, but was still working out some issues.

Emergency calls also were being routed to the California Highway Patrol, he added.

A San Diego Police Department officer said the problem was happening throughout Southern California, and that local residents may call 619-531-2065 if they were having service problems.

Oceanside police recommended that residents who can’t get through to 911 should call the non-emergency dispatch number at 760-435-4900.

It was unclear what caused the disruption or when it started. Verizon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

According to Fox 5/KUSI, the outage has been traced to a fiber line issue, and phone companies were working to restore full service.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office said there was “a short hiccup” with Verizon communications, but that people could use 911.

“We are receiving calls normally,” he said.
