Tennessee suddenly needs a starting quarterback with the high-profile transfer of star Nico Iamaleava, and the Volunteers reportedly made a big-time offer to a Big 12 quarterback in trying to fill that void.
According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Tennessee offered TCU quarterback Josh Hoover roughly $1 million more in his NIL deal than he currently makes at TCU. But Hoover, who reportedly already has a 7-figure salary with the Horned Frogs, turned Tennessee down and chose to stay in Fort Worth.
Getting Hoover would’ve been a big win for the Volunteers, who are in desperate need of a talented quarterback to replace Iamaleava, who had quickly developed into one of the best QBs in the country last season. Hoover is destined to be one of the top quarterbacks in the Big 12 in 2025, but it appears he’ll be staying at TCU despite being offered more money in Knoxville.
Hoover led TCU to a 9-4 record and a victory in the New Mexico Bowl last season, and he put up big numbers while doing it in his first season as the Horned Frogs’ full-time starter. Hoover set the single-season program record for passing yards with 3,949 yards to go with 27 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions.
In the wake of the Iamaleava saga, Tennessee had its eyes on Hoover, who had a strong spring camp with TCU after his banner season in 2024. But with Hoover rejecting Tennessee’s offer, Josh Heupel’s program is still searching for someone who can even somewhat replicate with Iamaleava did and was destined to do in 2025.
Jake Merklinger and true freshman George MacIntyre are the only 2 scholarship quarterbacks on Tennessee’s roster right now.
