The tunnel is part of the 889km Char Dam National Highway project prime minister Narendra Modi launched in December 2016.
Connecting four ancient Himalayan pilgrimages, the road is designed to be 10m wide, with double lanes and paved shoulders.
The tunnel project made headlines in November 2023 when a ceiling collapse trapped 40 workers inside the tunnel for 17 days, reports Times of India.
All the trapped workers eventually came out alive.
The collapse halted tunnelling until India’s transport ministry allowed it to resume in January 2024.
The tunnel will be ready for use in the coming year, according to the Times.
