To the Editor:
Our mother, Susie Johnson, recently passed away, and a few hours before she left us, she requested that we send a letter to the editor on her behalf. She proceeded to essentially tell us to write the following:
When I was young, I told my mother that I wanted to be a teacher, and I was blessed to be a teacher for 40 years. I taught in Southern California and at Nokomis, Redwood Valley, and Yokayo schools. Teaching was such a rewarding experience, and it greatly surpassed all of my expectations. As I look back on our time together, I really feel that we were one big family that did so much for each other, and now as I am about to go, I feel compelled to express my gratitude to all of you.
I wish to thank all of the students that I was lucky enough to meet, you energized me, and you taught me so much. I am indebted to all of you because you inspired me to be a better teacher and person, by showing me how to be grateful, kind, polite, helpful, thoughtful, joyful, energetic, patient, resilient, and humble. You always served as my role models, and I feel so thankful for your guidance and inspiration.
I also wish to thank the parents, grandparents, volunteers, janitors, librarians, nurses, office staff, crossing guards, teachers, and principals. Your hard work and camaraderie created such a positive and inclusive environment, and it led to so much personal and educational success. You made going to school fun and enjoyable, thereby making each day a good one.
Joy does not give you gratitude, gratitude gives you joy, and I am so grateful for our time together. I do not have enough words or time to properly thank you, but as Winnie the Pooh once said, “those who touch your heart will stay there forever.” You gave me such a blessed life, and you will always be in my heart, for ever and ever.
Thank You, Bless You, I Love You!
