Tuesday is the final day for San Diego residents to cast ballots in the special primary election for the county’s First Supervisorial District.

Nearly 52,000 mail ballots have already been returned, according to the county. Voters can expect updates on election results throughout April and into early May.

The first set of unofficial election night results will come in shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday.

This update will include mail ballots received before Election Day and vote center ballots from early voting between March 29 and April 7.

After the first unofficial report, election night updates will only include vote center ballots cast on Election Day. More unofficial results will be released by 6 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Monday.

Election results must be certified by May 8, although for this special election, the Registrar of Voters expects certification to occur on an earlier date.

Thirteen voting centers will be open Tuesday, including the Registrar’s office and six additional centers open until 8 p.m.

Any voter who is in line at a vote center or an official ballot drop box at 8 p.m. will be allowed to vote. However, no one can join the line after the 8 p.m. deadline.

Seven people, including four elected officials, are running to replace former San Diego County Supervisor Nora Vargas in her District 1 seat in Tuesday’s primary.

Vargas announced in late December that she would not serve her second term — despite winning re-election in November.

    The candidates are:

Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre Chula Vista Deputy Mayor Carolina Chavez Energy consultant Elizabeth Efird Business owner and former Imperial County Supervisor Louis Fuentes Chula Vista Mayor John McCann San Diego City Councilwoman Vivian Moreno Marketing firm associate Lincoln Pickard

The winner will fill the vacant seat until January 2029.

If no candidate receives a majority of the votes on Tuesday, a runoff will take place July 1.

Residents of District 1 who are not registered to vote can visit any vote center or the Registrar’s office to conditionally register and vote provisionally through April 8.

The Registrar’s office can confirm when an individual ballot was received at sdvote.com.
