Low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines just made a highly controversial decision, and it's being met with mixed reactions from customers. The airline will begin flying deportation flights for the federal government out of Arizona, beginning in May.
Avelo CEO, Andrew Levy, indicated that the decision to fly for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration Control and Enforcement (ICE) agency is part of a "long-term charter program." He said in a statement: "We realize this is a sensitive and complicated topic."
While some fliers on social media don't seem fazed by the news and others even support it, needless to say, many people have strong opinions about Avelo assisting ICE with deportation flights. Some are even vowing never to fly on the carrier.

New Haven mayor, Justin Elicker, said in an emailed statement to the New Haven Register:
"Avelo Airlines' decision to charter deportation flights from Mesa Gateway Airport in Arizona is deeply disappointing and disturbing. For a company that champions themselves as 'New Haven's hometown airline,' this business decision in antithetical to New Haven's values."
Avelo reportedly plans on using three of its Boeing 737 airplanes to operate the deportation flights.
As for whether this move will have an impact on their business? Time will tell. However, with the busy summer travel season fast approaching and customers looking for the best deal, Avelo's low-cost fares might prove too good to pass up, regardless of personal opinions.
