San Francisco announces five finalist names for new Great Highway park

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Following the contentious closure of the Upper Great Highway in San Francisco last month, the Recreation and Parks Department sought the public’s input in naming the 50-acre park that would open in its place. On Monday, the final five names were announced.

More than 3,900 responses were received by the city’s parks department between March 20 and April 2. Submissions ranged from the thoughtful and creative to frustrated and political.

The five finalist park names are:

Parkland Parkway Sunset Dunes Great Parkway Fog Line Plover Parkway

Parkland Parkway could give a nod to the numerous amenities planned for the park that stretches from Lincoln Way to Sloat Boulevard. Officials said SF’s newest park would include art installations, lounge spaces, seating for events, space for skating, bike racks, outdoor fitness equipment and a nature exploration area.

Sunset Dunes is an ode to the towering dunes formed from Ocean Beach sands. According to the National Park Service, these dunes formed from Ocean Beach used to stretch over the city’s hills and all the way into where the Financial District is today.

Great Parkway takes into consideration the former Great Highway naming. In one submission of this name, the reasoning stated: “It’s historically been known as The Great Highway. It’s becoming a park. A parkway is defined as ‘an open landscaped highway.’ So calling it The Great Parkway reflects its history, it’s existence as a park, and its definition.”

Fog Line, which was one of many fog-related submissions, pays tribute to the weather conditions so often found in the area, especially during the summer months.

Plover Parkway takes a natural approach to the new park. It pays mind to the western snowy plover, a federally threatened shorebird that can be found at Ocean Beach.

The five final names will be discussed and possibly voted on during a Recreation and Park Commission meeting on Wednesday at 1 p.m., officials said.
