Federal inmate dies in southern Colorado prison

A federal inmate at a high-security prison in southern Colorado died in custody Monday, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Theodore Matthews, a 43-year-old man who was convicted in Maryland in 2014 of conspiring to participate in a racketeering enterprise, was found unresponsive in the federal prison in Florence at about 2:15 a.m. Monday, according to a news release from the department.

Employees tried to give Matthews medical assistance, but the man was declared dead shortly after, federal officials said.

Matthews was serving a 17.5-year sentence and had transferred to the United States Penitentiary in Florence in July 2024, the release stated. He was scheduled to be released in December 2026, according to prison records.
