In recognition of the 57th anniversary of the passage of the Federal Fair Housing Act in 1968, Greeley City Council proclaimed April to be Fair Housing Month.
The act guaranteed that people who live in the United States could purchase a home and that the process would be fair. This meant that they could not be denied housing based on discriminatory reasons such as sex, race, disability, religion, family status or country of origin.
The state of Colorado extends these protections by protecting against discrimination based on marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression and veteran status. These protections ensure equality of choice for all transactions involving renting or buying a home, receiving a mortgage, seeking housing assistance and other housing-related activities.
Despite these protections, fair housing continues to be a rising issue from year to year.
“Unfortunately, the number of fair housing complaints has grown every year. It never goes down,” Greeley Housing Director Deb Callies said. “The group who most often experience discrimination in access to housing are folks living with a disability.”
With this proclamation, the city is attempting to highlight this issue, encouraging any local efforts to combat discrimination, which the city stated could be just as effective as federal efforts, if not more so.
“Where we grow up and live impacts our educational attainment, health disparities, career opportunities and generational wealth,” Mayor Pro Tem Dale Hall said. “Fair housing is essential to the ethical commitment of the city and plays a crucial role in our community, and illegal barriers to equal opportunity housing diminish the rights of us all.”
