An early morning collision in La Mesa Friday claimed the life of a driver from Spring Valley who authorities said was not wearing a seat belt.
The man, 77, was headed west on state Route 94 shortly after 5 a.m. when the Ford Expedition he was driving veered to the left for unknown reasons and struck a Ford F-150 just east of Massachusetts Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The impact caused the SUV to overturn and sent the truck crashing over a divider and into the eastbound lanes.
Paramedics took the driver of the SUV to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The CHP withheld his name pending family notification. The other driver was uninjured.
