Chicago Bears new $3.2bn stadium faces more uncertainty after worrying comments from team boss at league meeting

The NFL team have been looking at building a 75,000-capacity lakefront venue – south of their current Soldier Field home.

And just last month Chicago-based Fairpoint Development unveiled a proposal for an impressive stadium there

But the Bears have already revealed that leaving the city is another option.

Now team president and CEO Kevin Warren has told the NFL‘s annual meeting what the main alternative is.

His comments might concern Bears’ fans whose hearts were set on the exciting idea of a south-side stadium.

Warren said the team are looking into Arlington Heights in Illinois.

The franchise owns a 326-acre property there, which is best known as the old Arlington International Racecourse.

The Bears paid $197.2million for the site in  September 2021 but have so far left it undeveloped.

Warren said: “The focus now is both downtown and Arlington Heights.

“These are not linear processes or projects. They take time, they take a lot of energy and effort.”

But Warren insisted the Bears are making good progress in finding a new venue.

He added: “I am very, very pleased with where we are.

“I think we, collectively as a group, are where we thought we would be.”

If the Bears do decide on the $3.2bn stadium proposed by Fairpoint Development, it would have a park bridge linking to downtown.

It’s understood the scheme would need need $600m in public funding.
