LSU, 1 of only 2 SEC teams to not make the NCAA Tournament this season, already has some reinforcements for next season with Portland transfer Max Mackinnon committing to the Tigers.
Mackinnon’s agent, Daniel Moldovan, told ESPN of the transfer plans on Thursday night.
Mackinnon not only comes to Baton Rouge from a great distance after averaging 14.5 points and shooting 41% from 3-point territory this season for the West Coast Conference program. He’s a 6-foot-6 wing from Australia, which is where LSU basketball associate head coach David Patrick is from, so there is a connection there.

Mackinnon is one of the top mid-major transfers in the portal, and he selected the Tigers over multiple programs who were pursuing him this offseason. Mackinnon has already travelled a long road during his collegiate career in addition to being from Australia. He spent his first 2 seasons of college ball with Elon followed by a 1-year stint with Portland during the 2024-25 season.
Mackinnon also averaged 4.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists this past season for the Pilots on 46.7% shooting from the field and 88.7% free throw shooting, so he knows how to score the ball, which LSU will welcome next season after going 14-18 overall and just 3-15 in the SEC this season.
LSU is now up to 4 transfer commitments already this offseason.
