Texas A&M is in the market for a new basketball coach, giving AD Trev Alberts a key hire to account for heading into the offseason.
On Tuesday, news broke that Buzz Williams was leaving the Aggies after 6 seasons with the program. Texas A&M went to 3 straight NCAA Tournaments under Williams, but he has since been confirmed as the new head coach at Maryland, succeeding Kevin Willard, who departed for the Villanova job.
Shortly after the news broke, Alberts addressed the situation via a statement, expressing confidence in the future of A&M basketball and finding the right leader:
We would like to thank Buzz for his years of service heading up our men’s basketball program. We wish he and Corey and their family all the best moving forward.
We are excited about the future of Aggie Basketball and we will find the right leader for our program.

It has been a busy couple of years for turnover with A&M athletics. Mike Elko was hired ahead of the 2024 season to replace Jimbo Fisher on the football field, and A&M baseball had to replace Jim Schlossnagle last summer with Michael Earley.
A&M is also not the only SEC basketball program to make a move this offseason. Texas moved on from Rodney Terry after a string of early March Madness exits by hiring Xavier head coach and former Arizona head coach Sean Miller to lead the Longhorns.
We’ll see where A&M turns moving forward in the ever-competitive SEC after a historic season for the league.
