In the episode released on Friday, March 28, Rinna revealed that her father died by assisted suicide at 94 with a “death doula,” and that her mother was attacked by a man who would later be identified as a San Francisco serial killer.

Rinna said that her mother Lois had a run-in with David Carpenter, who would become known as the Trailside Killer in 1960. That encounter eventually led to his arrest and serving seven years in prison.

Carpenter was convicted of killing seven people, admitted that he murdered an eighth victim and was suspected of killing two others.

“My mom, when she was 30 years old, was brutally attacked by a serial killer,” Rinna said on her podcast. “We didn’t know he was a serial killer at the time, but he turned out to be a serial killer.”

She revealed that she started to think about the incident again after she heard that a producer is considering doing a project on Carpenter.

Rinna said that her mother worked with Carpenter and felt sorry for him because he stuttered. One day as she was waiting for the bus to go to a dentist’s appointment, Carpenter rolled up and offered to give her a ride and added that he’d like her to see his new baby.

Although she initially declined, Carpenter insisted, and she sensed something was wrong when he stopped stuttering.

“And she said, ‘David, what’s going on?’ He said, ‘I don’t know, Lois. Sometimes, something funny comes over me.’ And she knew she was f—king cooked.”

She continued to explain that Carpenter drove her mother to a deserted road and started to attack her. “He straddles my mom, my mom’s in the passenger seat, grabs a knife out of the glove box—all of a sudden he goes at her with a knife.”

In an attempt to fight back, Rinna’s mother grabbed the knife, which almost cut off two of her fingers.

Luckily, a military police officer was driving down the road, but then Carpenter went after Lois with a hammer before the police officer shot him, likely saving her life.

“This is the creepiest, weirdest part of it all. [My mother] is in full-on shock. He hit her at least five times on the head with a hammer. Her fingers are dangling. Her purse spills out, she opens the car door somehow…and she’s so busy picking up the items to put back in her purse. Her head is, like, gushing blood. She’s totally in shock, but all she wants to do is put her things back into her purse.”

Rinna’s mother ended up spending three months in the hospital to recover but went on to live a full life. She died in November 2021 at the age of 93.
