The Tigers announced they’ve placed second baseman Gleyber Torres on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to March 29, because of a left oblique strain. Justyn-Henry Malloy is up from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move.
Torres departed Friday’s extra-inning loss to the Dodgers in the sixth inning. He’d experienced what the team initially called rib tightness. Torres didn’t play over the weekend, and the team evidently diagnosed the side discomfort as an oblique strain. The club has yet to provide an indication of the severity. He’ll be out until at least next Tuesday, and there’s a decent chance this will shelve him beyond the minimum 10 days. Even low-grade oblique strains usually cost hitters a few weeks.
