Wet weather ahead for the Bay Area

(KRON) -- Wet weather continues through Tuesday. A warming and drying trend kicks off Wednesday.

Low pressure over the Eastern Pacific Ocean is moving toward the Pacific Northwest today. Rain showers from the associated warm front have moved inland, with rain increasing in coverage and intensity through the mid-morning hours. Southerly winds are also expected to increase with widespread wind gusts of 20 mph, up to 45 mph along the immediate coast, in the higher terrain, and through gaps and passes. Wind and rain diminish by late morning with isolated to scattered rain showers expected in the afternoon.

A cold front will move from northwest to southeast this evening, producing another round of steady rain. Totals over the next 24 hours: 0.10 to 1.50 of an inch with southwest-facing coastal ranges receiving the greatest accumulation.

Post-frontal rain showers will continue through the day on Monday. There is a slight (15%) chance of thunderstorms during the day on Monday, primarily in the North Bay.  If a thunderstorm were to develop, it would produce locally gusty winds and heavy rainfall, lightning, and small hail.

The low will be slow to push through the Bay Area, but as it does so on Tuesday, it will produce widespread light rain with totals up to 0.25 of an inch.

After that, the rest of the week will remain dry, with the exception of some drizzle at the coast. A warming trend kicks off on Wednesday, with temperatures above seasonal averages by the weekend. As high pressure builds across the West and cloud cover is lost, cold conditions return overnight in the higher terrain.
