MISSION VIEJO – Santa Margarita senior Leo Francis had a good Saturday.
Francis won the 100, the 200 and the long jump in the Orange County Championships at Mission Viejo High School. He was the top contributor for Santa Margarita’s boys team winning the team title, providing 30 of the Eagles’ 64 points.
He won the 100 meters in 10.57 seconds and the 200 meters in 21.17, both wind-legal times. Francis, who committed to Penn, finished first in the long jump, which he calls his favorite event, with a mark of 23 feet, 7 inches.
“I was not expecting to win all three,” Francis said. “I knew I had a good chance in all of them. I’m just super glad I could score points for the team and get some good individual marks.”

He also anchored Santa Margarita’s victorious 4×400 relay team.
Francis was the boys sprint athlete of the meet.
Mater Dei’s 4×100 relay team made quite a debut Saturday.
Running in a meet as a unit for the first time, Gavin Honor, Colin Woodruff, Ryan Hopkins and Chuck McDonald ran the second-fastest time in Orange County this season and set the meet record and a school record with their time of 41.44 seconds.
Hopkins became eligible for track and field competition this week, having transferred from JSerra where he competed in sprints and relays and also was the football team’s starting quarterback this past fall. The foursome began practicing as a relay unit earlier this week.
Honor did not expect the relay team to do what it did Saturday.
“I didn’t think we’d do this well, honestly,” said Honor, also a standout receiver for Mater Dei’s football team. “With all of us running together for the first time, this is impressive.”
Hopkins was impressed, too.
“It was nice to get out with a new set of guys and just compete,” he said.
The best time in the 4×100 relay this season belongs to Servite at 40.82. Servite this weekend competed in the Texas Relays in Austin where the Friars’ 4×200 relay on Saturday was clocked at 1 minute, 24.34 seconds, which is the best time in Orange County history.
Tesoro junior Peyton Brown was also a double winner Saturday. He won the 110 hurdles in 14.67 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 38.75.
Brown said he could have done better in the 110 hurdles, and overcame an early error in the race.
“My start was a little rough,” he said. “I’ve just got to stay clean from there.”
Woodbridge senior Aidan Antonio won the 1,600 in 4 minutes, 18.34 seconds. He passed Corona del Mar’s Max Douglass on the final turn.
“That’s always been my favorite spot to really kick it in, the last 125 meters,” said Antonio, who was the boys distance athlete of the meet. “I like to take advantage of the corner and sling-shot it. It’s a lot of fun.”
Samueli Academy had its first ever winner in the Orange County Championships. Firewolves senior Khalil Watson won the 400 in 49.06.
Esperanza senior Ty Meyer had mixed feelings about his performance in the shot put. He won the event with a mark of 50 feet, 11 inches. His season best is 52-1.5.
“The goal for me this season is to improve in every meet,” said Meyer, the boys field athlete of the meet. “But I don’t like taking steps back.”
Tomuhini Topui, an All-Orange County football lineman at Mater Dei, won the discus with a mark of 166 feet, 7 inches.
Mater Dei senior Brandon Gorski finished second in the long jump at 23-2. He left the event with ice strapped to his left hamstring. He was unable to compete in the high jump in which he is the county leader at 6 feet, 8 inches.
Mater Dei finished second in the team scoring with 51 points. Tesoro was third with 39 points.
