Authorities on Saturday released the names of two police snipers who opened fire on a man, killing him, after he allegedly threatened several people with a gun this week.
According to news release from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, the San Diego police officers are Brandon Jordan and Chris Lingenhol, both special weapons and tactics snipers.
Jordan has been with the San Diego Police Department for 17 years and is assigned to Central Division Patrol. Lingenhol, an SDPD officer for 10 years, is with Mid City Division.
Around noon Tuesday, the 59-year-old suspect pointed a handgun at construction workers and a pest control employee in Miramar Ranch North.
Police responded and ordered the suspect to drop the weapon, which appeared to be a semi-automatic pistol, but he failed to comply. Once a SWAT team arrived, officers attempted to help the pest control employee, who had locked himself in his car, but the suspect allegedly brandished the handgun in their direction, prompting the gunfire.
The suspect’s name has yet to be released, Sheriff’s officials said, pending notification of next of kin.
The Sheriff’s office investigates shootings by SDPD officers to avoid conflicts of interest, under the terms of a 2022 agreement between local law enforcement agencies.
The SDPD also will conduct an administrative investigation.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting was asked to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit at 858-868-3200. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
