CHARLOTTE, N.C (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A decades-old Plaza Midwood business, Hair Klaudt, is getting kicked out. It’s all in the name of progress, but it comes with a price.
About five years ago, the business had to move out to make way for an apartment building, and now it’s happening again -- but for a different reason.
'Opening people's minds'
Some people come for the cut and color.
“I kind of wanted to create something that I found amusing,” said Karl Klaudt, the owner of Hair Klaudt.
Others come for the experience.
“I just like opening people’s minds to my world,” said Klaudt.

“Karl has his own line of fun hair color. It’s called Zombie Snott,” said Lydia Stern, Klaudt’s business partner.
And if that’s not your vibe, you can sink your teeth into their T-shirts for sale.
“I just wanted to do something silly even though I take what I do very serious,” said Klaudt.

Stern is Klaudt’s partner, not only in business, but in life. The couple just found out they have to move out.
“It doesn’t feel great, it makes me feel sad because there’s a lot of memories here,” said Klaudt.
Mecklenburg County bought the building. They’re going to tear it down when Hair Klaudt’s lease is up.
The county plans to expand the Briar Creek Greenway going right underneath Independence Boulevard and through Hair Klaudt's property
“In the past I’ve never really asked for help,” said Klaudt.

“I really hope someone sees this that would like a goofy salon in there, I really hope they do reach out to us,” said Klaudt.
Even though Klaudt desperately wants to stay in the eclectic neighborhood, he knows it might not be possible to afford another location there.
The business has until the end of August to move out.
The greenway extension project costs $11.3 in capital investment and will expand the trail from Monroe Road to Central Avenue.
