Long Beach recently got a visit from a historic boat — the Western Flyer.
Nautical history enthusiasts converged on Long Beach’s waterfront this weekend to delight in the rare opportunity to tour the iconic vessel, which is best known for its 1940 Sea of Cortez expedition with author John Steinbeck and marine biologist Ed Ricketts at its helm.
Their six-week expedition resulted in the 1941 publication of “Sea of Cortez: A Leisurely Journal of Travel and Research,” which has been credited for its impact on early environmental conservation efforts in California.
The Western Flyer visited Rainbow Harbor and Alamitos Bay on Saturday, March 22, as it makes it way to the Gulf of California for the first time since Steinbeck and Ricketts’ iconic expedition — 85 years ago.
