Weld County announces road safety action plan, asks residents for feedback ...Saudi Arabia

GreeleyTribune - Sport

Weld County is seeking feedback on the most dangerous places to walk, drive and cycle after announcing the launch of a planning process to reduce fatalities and severe injuries across the county’s roadways.

The plan — which encompasses all unincorporated areas of Weld County, as well as municipalities that don’t already have their own safety action plan — will be largely driven by resident feedback, according to a county news release.

To give feedback, go to weldsafestreets.com. The site includes an interactive map, in which residents can drop a pin in any area they feel unsafe walking, cycling, driving, crossing railroad tracks or anything else. Once there, residents can also sign up to receive email updates about the project.

“Our primary goal is to ensure that every resident and visitor can travel safely throughout Weld County,” Weld Board of County Commissioner Chair Perry Buck said in the release. “The Safety Action Plan represents a collaborative effort, and we encourage community members to actively participate by providing feedback and sharing their insight, which will be helpful in ensuring our roads can meet demand now and in the future.”

In 2023, the county received a $400,000 Safe Streets for All Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to fund projects aimed at preventing deaths and serious injuries on roadways.

The county says it began data analysis last October, starting to develop the action plan in February. Weld plans to finish developing the plan by the end of October, according to a timeline on the project’s website.

“Safety and efficiency are elements we continually look at and strive for when making improvements to our transportation system,” Weld Public Works Director Curtis Hall said in the release. “The feedback we receive from this safety action plan will strengthen our effort. By residents identifying issues and critical areas through an interactive map or written comments, we can determine effective measures for improvements to make roads safer, with the goal of continuing to work toward reducing serious injuries and fatalities.”

    Safe system approach

The county says the basis of the plan will be built around the safe system approach, a method long used in industrial safety that was recently adopted into transportation planning. The approach uses multiple layers and redundancies to best protect motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

The objectives: safer people, safer roads, safer speeds, safer vehicle and post-care crash. By improving all five elements, the approach aims to reduce fatalities and serious injuries, even if the gross number of crashes does not decrease.

When Greeley announced a similar program last summer, “Vision Zero,” city engineer Steven Younkin likened the five elements to Swiss cheese.

“A crash needs to pass through all five holes to result in a fatal or severe crash,” he said.

To achieve the objectives, the approach preaches six principles to keep in mind while planning and designing transportation systems:

Death and serious injuries are unacceptable Humans make mistakes Humans are vulnerable Responsibility is shared Safety is proactive Redundancy is crucial.
