Twelve strangers have entered a mansion on the west coast of Canada with one thing on their minds – to lie their way to a million dollars.
Million Dollar Secret is just about to launch on Netflix. Described as the streaming service’s answer to The Traitors, it is a game of hunter and hunted.
One of the twelve contestants has been awarded a life-changing $1m (£772,000)
Over the course of eight episodes, the other players must hunt down who that is and eliminate them to be in with a chance of securing the cash for themselves.
The show, which is presented by British comedian and actor Peter Serafinowicz, is being released by Netflix in three tranches weekly with episodes one to three available to stream on Wednesday 26 March, episodes four to six on Wednesday 2 April and episodes seven and eight on Wednesday 9 April.
We take a look at the contestants convinced they can con and deceive their way to a million dollars.
Cara Kies (Photo: Netflix)
Cara Kies, 29, is a cook at US burger chain In-N-Out, who used to work as a kids’ birthday party clown.
From a tight-knit family, relationships with loved ones are what matters most to her but she’s keen to get hold of the million dollars.
Cara is used to playing games at home and believes it has helped her develop good listening skills and intuition.
She said: “All those game nights were training me for this moment.”
But her Achilles heel could be the strong bonds she builds in the game.
“I care a lot about people’s feelings, and I never want to hurt anyone,” she said.
Chris
Contestant Chris Allen (Photo: Netflix)Entrepreneur Chris Allen, 34, is the CEO of beverage firm Osena Spiked Coconut Water.
Educated at one of the Ivy League universities, Chris hopes his leadership skills and ability to stay cool in the face of conflict will set him apart in the lakeside villa.
He said: “It takes a long time to build trust but only a second to lose it forever and never get it back.
“I want to gain a reputation in the house as a straightforward, trustworthy player and then cash in all of that trust for a late-game deception that will put me on the inside track to win a million dollars.”
Chris’s game plan is to throw off any suspicion by presenting himself to the other players as a struggling entrepreneur instead of a successful CEO.
Corey Niles (Photo: Netflix)
Corey Niles is a 38-year-old builder.
He has spent months working out his strategy game but is ready to throw it all away the moment he steps into the villa.
He said: “Strategy can only take you so far in this cutthroat house.
“I wrote these words down in my journal as a reminder before entering the house and will read them every night before bed: ‘Let them judge you, let them misunderstand you, let them gossip about you. Their opinions are not your problems.’ “
But there is one thing Corey believes he can depend on – his talent for taking initiative.
He added: “Growing up with a single mother and three younger siblings, I learned to become the man of the house at a very young age.”
Harry
Harry Donenfeld (Photo: Netflix)Harry Donenfeld, 59, is a photographer.
A comic book enthusiast, Harry thinks his ability to evade questions will be his greatest superpower.
His plan is to “play a game of omission” without “being forced to lie outright”, so he can maintain a level of integrity.
He said: “I am good at putting people together and at ease, but that could make me an immediate target, too.”
Previously a personal photographer for multiple billionaires, this won’t be the first time Harry has rubbed shoulders with wealth so he should fit in well in the mansion.
Jaimi Alexander (Photo: Netflix)
Jaimi Alexander, 42, works as a life coach.
As the eldest daughter in her family, she says she was raised to take ownership so throwing other players under the bus may not come naturally.

Instead, her plan is to use her ability to read people like a book and listen to her intuition above all else.
She said: “I’m going to try not to talk too much, which is not easy for me.
“I really just like people and connecting with them.”
Jaimi’s biggest weakness, she claims, is being “too nice”.
But she describes herself as a “phenomenal liar”, who can “put on a face and be an actor”.
Kyle
Contestant Kyle Wimberley (Photo: Netflix)Kyle Wimberley is a 27-year-old construction worker.
Kyle has admitted he is not a very good liar.
He said: “I am liable to start laughing immediately post-lie.”
So his game plan is to “hide in plain sight”.
He hopes being fully honest about himself will throw the other players, who will think his “truths are actually lies”.
As a construction worker, Kyle believes he is well-suited to handle the twists and turns of the competition.
“With crazy things happening daily and 11 other people making their own moves, it’s crucial to be able to adapt,” he said.
Lauren Trefethren (Photo: Netflix)
Lauren Trefethren is a 35-year-old stay-at-home mum.
From Fargo in North Dakota, she is a self-proclaimed “expert of Midwest culture” but can also name all 50 states in under a minute.
She previously worked as a school counsellor and believes this will stand her in good stead.
She said: “I was trained to pick up on subtle changes in behaviour and tone.”
The mum of three wants to lead with her reputation as a positive, likable and trustworthy person, and hopes to prove to herself and her children she doesn’t have to “betray my morals and values to be competitive”.
Lydia
Lydia Blair(Photo: Netflix)Lydia Blair is a 64-year-old retired escrow agent – someone who holds property in trust for third parties while a transaction is finalised or a disagreement is resolved.
The Texan grandmother hopes to slip under the radar as a retired grandparent.
She said: “In our society, a woman my age is invisible.
“It’s easy to be overlooked and underestimated.”
But there is more to Lydia than meets the eye. She has been playing in professional poker tournaments for 30 years and has a ruthless streak.
“These folks are not my friends,” she said.
And she plans to keep her cards close to her chest.
“I don’t want the other contestants to know that I’m smart, well-travelled, and fairly sophisticated,” she added.
Contestant Phillip Roundtree (Photo: Netflix)
Dr Phillip Roundtree, 41, is a university professor of social work, and a mental health advocate.
He has 15 years of experience working as a therapist and says he knows how to read people and gain their trust, which he’ll use in this game.
He said: “By being open about my life and showing my true personality, I know others will take everything at face value — even if I am being deceptive.”
But he admits his professional expertise could be a double-edged sword.
“My biggest weakness is and probably will always be overanalysing. I tend to think through every possible scenario, and sometimes the simplest answer is the right one.”
Samantha
Contestant Samantha Hubbard (Photo: Netflix)Samantha Hubbard is a 41-year-old police officer.
She believes she can be a convincing liar and plans to portray herself as a stay-at-home mom who really needs the prize money.
Unafraid to manipulate people’s emotions, she also realises others may do the same to her.
She said: “My biggest weakness is caring and letting my heart get involved.”
But her police training means she has already overcome this in certain situations.
“I’ve hung out with a lot of toads in Vegas just to sit at a table in a club and not spend a dime,” she said. “At least my feet didn’t hurt.”
Se Young Metzroth (Photo: Netflix)
Se Young Metzroth, 35, is a vice president of information systems overseeing a firm’s IT activities.
With her career in video game research and passion for board games, Se Young believes she has developed a deep understanding of.
She said: “I am thrilled to be playing a game nobody has played before.”
The only “workable strategy” is to stay under the radar and “avoid being annoying”, according to her.
A true gamer, she has already been putting in the practice in the run-up to Million Dollar Secret by “lying to people around me about inconsequential things”.
Sydnee
Sydnee Falkner (Photo: Netflix)Sydnee Falkner, 32, works in medical sales.
Her greatest asset, she maintains, is that people always jump to the conclusion she isn’t a serious threat because of the way she looks.
She plans to play up the “blonde persona” to catch others by surprise.
She said: “My greatest strength is my looks.
“Everyone dismisses me based on my outward appearance. It’s happened my whole life and can serve its purpose when needed.”
Having grown up in northern Alaska, she is tougher than she looks.
“I’ve worked in negative 80-degree [Fahrenheit/minus 26°C] weather as a maintenance tech in pure darkness,” she said.
