Every other Monday, Aaron is joined at 8:30 a.m. by Tom Jensen, the director of Public Policy Polling, for a longstanding regular segment called “What We’re Thinking,” looking at recent survey numbers and discussing what they tell us about American public opinion – election-related and otherwise.
This week, Tom and Aaron discuss the Democratic Party’s recent decision to zero in on Medicaid as a key issue – which Tom thinks is a very smart move, partly because left-leaning voters need a single issue to focus on, to avoid being overwhelmed by everything at once. And health care is a particularly salient issue: protecting Medicaid is a goal that unites Democratic voters and divides Republicans, and there’s a long history of minority parties making big gains in midterms by focusing on health care as the centerpiece of their campaign. (Think 1994, 2010, and 2018.)
Also, Tom discusses a trio of upcoming special elections: two for U.S. House seats in Florida, and one for a seat on the State Supreme Court in Wisconsin. Those Florida seats are likely to go to Republicans, since they’re in very right-leaning districts, but it could bode well for Democrats in 2026 if their candidates are able to close the gap from last November. The Wisconsin race is much more noteworthy, though: the Democrat actually has a slight edge there, and whichever party wins will hold a majority on the court – which could impact Congressional district lines, as early as 2026.
