Tyon Grant-Foster was the biggest bright spot for No. 13 GCU, which was blown out by 4-seeded Maryland 81-49 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.
The game took place in Seattle, the same state of Washington where GCU captured first-round magic in last year’s tournament with a win over Saint Mary’s before giving eventual Final Four team Alabama all it could handle in the second round.
Their experience wasn’t enough to be the difference in this year’s first round, despite much of Maryland’s rotation playing in their first tournament.
Offense was hard for either side to come by early, with seven combined points over the game’s first five minutes (3-for-18 shooting combined). But as Maryland’s “Crab Five” starting lineup settled into the game, it used a 24-5 run to take control.
Then, when the Terrapins had their lead up to 33-13, Grant-Foster took hold of the steering wheel for the GCU offense, nailing back-to-back 3s and finding Lok Wur for the team’s third straight after it started 1-for-10 from distance.
However, GCU’s defense wasn’t able to pull the same uptick out that its offense could, and it ended the half down 42-28. It was helped by a stepback 3 at the buzzer from Grant-Foster, who scored 16 of his team’s 28 first-half points.

The second half made it clear Grant-Foster’s run was the anomaly as the team’s offense came back down to earth after he opened the second half with a bucket. He finished with 23 points, four rebounds and three assists to end his Grand Canyon career.
Over a six-minute span in the second half (from 14:55 remaining through 8:40 remaining), the only GCU points came via Grant-Foster free throws. Maryland extended its lead from 15 to 23 over the span, reaching as large as 33 before going final.
Maryland will face 12-seed Colorado State in the second round after the Rams upset 5-seed Memphis in the first round.
Star frontcourt duo Derik Queen (12 points, 15 rebounds) and Julian Reese (18 points, nine rebounds) led the way for Maryland. Ja’Kobi Gillespie added 16 points.
