SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- An employee at a Walgreens in San Francisco's Castro District was arrested Wednesday for allegedly stabbing a suspected shoplifter. According to the San Francisco Police Department, SFPD officers were patrolling the 400 block of Castro Street at 4:35 a.m. when they were flagged down regarding a stabbing.
Officers made contact with a man who appeared to be suffering from injuries associated with an assault, police said. Paramedics were requested to the scene.
Further investigation indicated that the man was seen fleeing a nearby store with unpaid merchandise. The man and a store employee, according to the investigation, got into a verbal altercation outside the store that turned physical.
Officers developed probable cause to arrest the employee -- 45-year-old Guang Hong -- and the alleged shoplifter -- 30-year-old Larry Whitlock. Hong, who denied medical attention, was booked into San Francisco County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon.
Whitlock was cited for battery and petty theft. He was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
In April of 2023, a security guard was working at another San Francisco Walgreens store when he fatally shot Banko Brown. Investigators said Brown was attempting to dash out of the store with a bag of stolen items. The guard, Michael Earl-Wayne Anthony, tried to stop Brown from running away before he opened fire, surveillance cameras showed. The district attorney did not file any criminal charges against the guard.
