In celebration of Women’s History Month, Mayor Todd Gloria named Katy McDonald, executive director of Forever Balboa Park, as this year’s citywide “Woman of Distinction.”
McDonald and nine other women, nominated by their council members, were honored during Tuesday’s City Council meeting for their leadership, accomplishments and service to San Diego.
“As president and CEO of Forever Balboa Park, Katy is committed to preserving and enhancing San Diego’s crown jewel’s beauty and cultural vitality,” Mayor Todd Gloria said.
“Her instrumental role in the creation of The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, along with her leadership positions at the San Diego Symphony Orchestra and Museum of Modern Art, showcases her tireless efforts to enrich San Diego’s cultural institutions.”
Forever Balboa Park is a nonprofit organization that aims to advance Balboa Park. The organization emphasizes the importance of urban parks for people to enjoy nature.
McDonald also served as chief of staff at the San Diego Symphony Orchestra and deputy director of external affairs at the San Diego Museum of Art.

(Council member Jennifer Campbell, District 2) Sharon Gehl, a housing advocate who served on local boards such as the Mission Hills Town Council and Hillcrest Community Development Corporation. (Council member Stephen Whitburn, District 3) Emilia Castillo, community organizer in southeastern San Diego (Council member Henry Foster, District 4) Khara Mangiduyos is the owner of Kalei’s Kitchenette, a Hawaiian fusion restaurant in Rancho Peñasquitos. (Council member Marni Von Wilpert, District 5) Sgt. Maj. Rosalia Scifo USMC, Retired (Council President pro Tem Kent Lee, District 6) Haydee Jezabel Ramirez, director of programs at Armed Services YMCA San Diego. (Council member Raul Campillo, District 7) Claudia Zavalza Hough-Sne, advocate for underserved populations in South San Diego.
