The Bombay High Court has allowed Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his estranged wife, Dhanashree Verma to skip the usual 6-month waiting period after filing for divorce. This decision was made so that the divorce could be finalised before the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) , where Chahal will be busy playing, as reported by Bar and Bench.
“The Bombay High Court has overturned a Family Court decision that didn’t allow skipping the cooling-off period,” shared Bar and Bench on X (formerly Twitter). Justice Madhav Jamdar ordered the family court to wrap up the divorce proceedings by March 20.
Living apart and divorce filing
Yuzvendra and Dhanashree married in December 2020 and have been living separately since June 2022. They filed for divorce in February this year and also requested to bypass the cooling-off period. Normally, under Section 13B(2) of the Hindu Marriage Act, couples must wait six months after filing for divorce to see if reconciliation is possible. However, since they have been apart for so long, the court decided this period wasn’t necessary.

Initially, the court denied waiving the cooling-off period because Yuzvendra hadn’t fully complied with the agreed financial settlement. He was supposed to pay Dhanashree a total of Rs 4 crore, 75 lakhs, but he has only paid Rs 2 crore, 37 lakhs, and 55 thousand as of now however, he has agreed to pay the remaining amount after the settlement. The Bombay High Court took into account their long separation and asked the family court to finalise the divorce by March 20, knowing the need to settle before the IPL season begins.
