The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) was never consistent in most of the seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL). In the last season, they started with a defeat before getting back on the winning track in the second encounter. The new season of the competition will be different for Bengaluru, who will be under the young captaincy of Rajat Patidar.
When the management left out Faf du Plessis from the retention list and didn’t go for them in the mega auction, many speculated that Virat Kohli might get the leadership in the department. But the selectors decided to show full confidence in young Patidar, who, as announced by the franchise, would be the captain of the side for the next five years.
RCB will play the opening game of the season against the Kolkata Knight Riders on March 22 in the evening at the Eden Gardens before they lock horns with the Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Both these games will test the batters against the quality spinners of the opponent side.
RCB will then return home for the first home game of the season at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium against the Gujarat Titans on April 02. Next, they will make a trip to the Wankhede Stadium for another mouth-watering clash against the Mumbai Indians. RCB’s second home game of the edition will be against the Delhi Capitals.
In the previous edition, Royal Challengers Bengaluru picked up the momentum in the second half of the event and this year will provide them the same chance because of playing more home games after April.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru faces Punjab Kings on successive occasions
The three-time runners-up of the tournament will be up against the Punjab Kings on back-to-back encounters, the first of which will be at home on April 18, before they face the same side in two days away. Back home, they will be against the Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals.
Their home game against CSK will be a thriller, especially after what happened in the last season, when they blew away the Yellow franchise in the last group-stage fixture to qualify for the playoffs of the tournament. Bengaluru’s last away clash will be in Lucknow.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s last two group-stage fixtures will be against the Sunrisers and the Knight Riders on May 13 and 17. The pressure will be huge on the young shoulders of Patidar, who, besides leading the side, will have to be careful with his batting in the new edition. His contribution will decide RCB’s performance against the spinners in the middle overs after the aggressive opening stand of Kohli and Phil Salt.
