A ROBOT designed to make coffee has been hailed as “more human than ever”.
The AI-controlled mechanical arm adapts to “chaos” in the kitchen unlike other machines, scientists say.
It can be ordered to make a coffee by vocal command — slowly plucking the necessary items from messy cabinets and drawers.
The robot, which has seven joints plus sensors in the hand, then puts a spoonful of coffee into the mug and adds boiling water from a kettle.
But it took more than four minutes to find a mug then fill it during a demo.
Creator Ruaridh Mon-Williams, a PhD student at Edinburgh University, said it combines AI with human “reasoning, movement and perception”.
He added: “This is a glimpse of the future where robots with increasingly advanced intelligence become commonplace.”
Humanoid robots are being designed for boring chores but many smash objects and struggle to find them if they get moved.
Experts say they could be a reality within a decade, costing up to £40,000.
