Nearly 3,000 homes and businesses in Greeley and Evans were without power for a stretch Saturday night after a power line fell in the Evans Cemetery, catching a small area of the cemetery on fire.
Two separate outages left about 2,850 customers without power from from 9:45-10:35 p.m. and another 180 customers in the dark from 10:10 p.m. to 5 a.m., according to an Xcel Energy representative.
The Greeley Fire Department first responded to reports of the downed power line at U.S. Highway 34 and 11th Avenue. When crews arrived, they noticed the line was in the Evans Fire Protection District and passed lead duties to them.
While an Xcel Energy crew was on its way, Evans firefighters monitored the live wire and made sure the fire didn’t spread. Once Xcel de-energized the line, crews quickly put the fire out — before it burned much grass at the cemetery.
“Luckily, that area is pretty well-kept up, so the fire burning didn’t spread very quickly,” Evans Fire Chief Joe DeSalvo said.
Firefighters were unsure exactly why the power line fell, but DeSalvo said there was no obvious cause — such as a car hitting a pole.
Crews were on scene for between and hour and 90 minutes, according to DeSalvo, and the eastbound lane of U.S. 34 was closed for roughly 30 minutes.
The city of Evans will identify potential grave damage in the coming days and coordinate with family and loved ones, according to a social media post.
