Respite Care breaks ground on new home in Timnath to increase capacity, centralize services

A nonprofit dedicated to providing respite care for families with children living with disabilities will open a new facility on 2.5 acres of land in Timnath, expanding the nonprofit’s capacity.

More than 150 people attended Respite Care’s groundbreaking celebration Thursday afternoon to start construction of its new home on 5000 Vista Del Pico Drive in Timnath, expected to open in about a year.

The new service area will centralize the organization for its clients in Weld and Larimer counties. The 21,000-square-foot facility — twice the size of its current home — will also increase the capacity from 65 children at one time to upwards of 175.

Respite Care, a nonprofit dedicated to serving children living with developmental disabilities from 6 weeks old to 18 years old, has been in Northern Colorado for 43 years.

Available 24/7, Respite Care offers enrichment activities like before- and after-school care, school-out days, wilderness camp and summer camps, according to Kristi Briles, Respite Care’s executive director. Families can also receive respite by giving their kids a “home away from home” overnight for up to 14 days.

The organization’s staff members, or child care specialists, go through highly specialized training to meet the medical needs of all children, including medication administration, seizure management and gastrostomy tube feedings.

In 1982, Respite Care opened its doors in a small house in Old Town Fort Collins. As the need grew past its original space, the nonprofit opened a new location on 6203 S. Lemay Ave. in Fort Collins in 2004.

Once again, Respite Care has outgrown its facility as it has continued to be one of the only respite care organizations available for children in Northern Colorado.

Briles said the team decided to expand its services — previously only available in Larimer County — into Weld County about two years ago. Within six months of piloting offerings to Weld County children, Respite Care and its donors agreed to move forward with serving both counties.

“We want to serve as many kids as we can,” she said.

Today, Respite Care serves more than 165 children in Northern Colorado with developmental disabilities, including around 24 children from Weld County. Briles anticipates the number of clients from Weld County will grow exponentially with the new building.

The current space prevents Respite Care from serving “all-hours parents requests” because capacity caps off around 65 while requests reach about 100 during the summer. The larger facility will also help the nonprofit better meet licensing changes in early childhood, like rules related to mixing age groups, she added.

    Financial needs

Briles said Respite Care relies on community donors to meet the needs of children living with disabilities in the community because “we can only grow as quickly as we bring in.”

“It takes more than $2.6 million to run Respite Care each year,” according to the nonprofit’s website. “More than 80% of our annual budget comes from our generous donors and community.”

The Respite Care team has reached $10.5 million of its $12 million goal to construct the new facility, Briles said. Respite Care expects to open the new structure by February 2026.

“About six months from now, we’ll be able to start intakes for a lot of kids,” Briles said. “We have space, and we can offer all the hours. So, it’s just one year to go.”
