Banner MD Anderson Cancer Centers in northern Colorado has brought in a new physician to offer specialized palliative care to established patients.
Heidi Hallam, board-certified in hospice and palliative care, joined Banner MD Anderson in November, according to a Banner Health news release. Her addition enhances comprehensive care for local cancer treatment patients, whether they have an early-stage cancer diagnosis or are nearing the end of life.
Provided alongside curative treatments, palliative care is personalized and aims to improve quality of life by relieving symptoms caused by the disease and its treatment, like “pain, fatigue, nausea and difficulty sleeping,” the release said.
The hospice care team who facilitated her uncle’s last days when she was a young girl sparked a passion to pursue the career path, she said in the news release. The providers prioritized his comfort to ensure his family could share meaningful last moments, leaving an impact on Hallam to this day.
“Throughout my medical training, the experience with my uncle’s care team has always been in the back of my mind,” Hallam said in the release. “It became clear that this field made the most sense for me and what’s important to me. I want to show the humanity of medicine, which is a big focus of my role.”
Hallam, a lifelong Colorado resident, has a medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She completed her residency at St. Anthony North Hospital and her fellowship back at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
She values bringing her background in family medicine to a hospital deeply connected to the local community, according to the release.
Hallam’s highly personalized, holistic and compassionate approach to palliative care — in collaboration with an entire care team — blends medical possibilities with every patient’s needs and preferences. She builds meaningful connections to understand her patient’s “stories, values and support systems,” the Banner Health release said.
Patients can receive care from Hallam at the Banner MD Anderson at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley and Banner MD Anderson at McKee Medical Center in Loveland. She works closely with the two hospitals’ “oncologists, radiation oncologists and other cancer care professionals” to provide an additional, physician-backed support system to patients.
“My philosophy of care is to strive to understand the whole person in order to improve the quality of life for patients and their families,” Hallam said. “Sometimes, people are nervous to pursue palliative care because they think it’s just there to take things away. In reality, palliative care is about understanding the things you can’t find in a medical chart. A patient is so much more than their diagnosis and I strive to honor that.”
