Family fuels success and soul for MiraSoul Ancestral Healing and Wellness

Anything is possible with family. Just ask Brittni Hernandez and her cousins.

In 2022, Hernandez and her cousins Freebird Funnday, Kahla Esquibel, Hope Archibeque and Anastacia Archibeque took the first steps toward opening their family business, MiraSoul Ancestral Healing and Wellness.

They purchased a space inside The Ambry, 716 16th St., Greeley, and set out to work, putting in blood, sweat and a lot of elbow grease into renovating their new space.

Their work paid off, as the family celebrated their two-year anniversary of being in business together on Saturday, but it was no walk in the park getting things started.

“It was fun but hard working with each other,” Esquibel said. “Like what colors do we want to use that we can all agree on and that we all like? We all have different tastes and things like that. I feel that was harder, but once we decided (on everything) then it was pretty easy after that. I feel like that was one of the harder things.”

When it was all said and done, they opened MiraSoul in March 2023.

Their business name comes from the Mirasol Mexican Restaurant which was owned by their aunts years ago on 8th Avenue in Greeley. Their aunts also ran the Lincoln Square Apartments in town, too.

Hernandez said the work ethic and passion for serving the community they saw from their aunts are a few of the pillars they use for their vision of MiraSoul.

The business offers locally made jewelry, body care products, art, ancestral wellness practices, massages and metaphysical and spiritual supplies. From sage bundles to locally sourced herbs, MiraSoul aims to be not only a welcoming space for all walks of life but also a place to find healing remedies.

Everything in the store is blessed with positive energy and white light, they explained. White light in a spiritual sense is associated with divine presence, enlightenment or a connection to a higher power.

Esquibel owns Earth Roots Massage Therapy, which she operates out of a space in MiraSoul, while Funnday, a local artist, has her finger-painted artwork for sale in the space, too. Anastacia owns and operates Casita Herbals inside the space as well.

Before they found their current space, Esquibel in 2021 was looking for a location for her business. During a tea party under a moon gathering, the cousins started talking about how to combine all of their talents and business ideas under one roof.

“We realized that there wasn’t really anywhere that we knew of at that time to buy things like sage,” Hernandez said. “These kinds of Earth medicines are used in many traditions for energetic cleansing and healing. So we said, ‘Let’s create it. Let’s create this space.’ ”

In addition to opening such a space, they set out to foster a healing community and bring healing modalities they were learning about to the community they all grew up in. When it came to finding a location, their priority was to find one in a historically marginalized area in Greeley.

Three years removed from all the sweat and family equity put in to create their space, Funnday said they’ve exceeded all of their hopes and dreams for their business.

“The support is beautiful. The way people come in and chat with us about how much they like it here,” Funnday said. “Our moon gatherings … just personally feel so fulfilling that we get to hang out with our community in those ways.”

MiraSoul offers free moon gatherings each month, usually when there’s a new moon, where attendees can sip tea, eat snacks and connect with each other as the dark side of the moon looks down.

When it comes to moon gatherings and the whole premise of their business, the cousins said they haven’t faced pushback or negativity from the community. Funnday said they’re grateful that those who are like-minded have found them and are helping build their community.

Hernandez said those who come to their space for the first time are curious and open-minded about everything, which is welcomed by the family.

“I think people are starting to get more comfortable with this idea of different ways of viewing life, death and spirits,” Hernandez said.

Moving forward, MiraSoul will offer opportunities for local artists to showcase their work for two months. Hernandez said they want to partner with wellness practitioners, as well as grow the classes they offer.

The future is as bright as the vibes the family gives when walking into their space. Even though working with family has its ups and downs, anything is possible with family.

The MiraSoul family answered a survey from The Ambry that asked, among other questions, what challenges their job creates and how they overcome them.

Hernandez read from their answer, saying that having five business owners who are strong women “who also bring five unique ideas, opinions, values and strengths” can be a challenge. But the benefits are stronger.

“We feel grateful that any challenge that we have faced with our business, we’ve never had to face alone. It’s a great feeling knowing we have four other soul sisters to turn to for support,” Hernandez read.
