The U.S. Air Force will host an open house Monday, March 31 in Raymer to discuss its Sentinel Program, an initiative to modernize and replace an aging ballistic missile system.
The meeting will run from 6-8 p.m. at Prairie High School, 42315 Weld County Road 133, according to a news release from F.E. Warren Air Force Base.
The meeting will provide landowners with updates regarding upcoming construction projects and the ongoing development after a recent review of the program by the Department of Defense. Officials will also discuss the project’s national security significance and how it will affect missile fields in the F.E. Warren Air Force Base area, according to the release.
By replacing the 400 aging missiles and their associated infrastructure that make up the land-based leg of the U.S. Nuclear Triad, the Sentinel Project aims to extend the life of the nuclear deterrent through 2075, according to the Air Force Global Strike Command.
The project includes replacing all land-based Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles in the continental U.S. with Sentinel ICBMs. Certain components and subsystems have been upgraded since the Minuteman III ICBM system became operational in the early 1970s, but most of the system’s fundamental infrastructure still uses the original equipment, a Sentinel fact sheet states.
The number, size, configuration and design of the nuclear warheads provided by the Department of Energy will remain unchanged, according to the project website.
Community members of both Weld and Logan counties are encouraged to attend and participate in a question-and-answer session.
