CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A recent incident at Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte has sparked calls for justice after a female student was allegedly attacked by a male football player.
The victim’s family claims the assault was fueled by racial and religious hatred. They’re now demanding a full investigation into the matter, including a hate crime designation.
The incident reportedly took place on Friday, March 7, inside a math class, where family says the football player verbally assaulted the student with racial slurs before physically attacking her.
The victim’s family has expressed frustration with the initial response from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS), calling it insufficient.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department initially took the report, but the FBI has since taken over the investigation. CMPD said the FBI holds the authority to determine if the incident qualifies as a hate crime.
While the identities of the students involved have not been released, both are currently under suspension. The victim’s family, along with community leaders, has pushed for stronger action, criticizing the school’s handling of the situation.
This incident is part of a larger pattern of violence in CMS schools. Recently, Mallard Creek High School saw a violent fight among students, leading to increased security. Parents and community members are now urging CMS to do more to ensure student safety and address rising tensions.
As the FBI investigates, the community is awaiting answers.
Statement released by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police below:
The CMPD School Resource Officer assigned to Ardrey Kell High School took the initial police report of the incident that took place on Friday, March 7, 2025. The report is being submitted to the FBI for further investigation. The FBI, rather than the CMPD, holds the ultimate authority in determining which incidents are classified as hate crimes. Per state statute, juvenile records remain confidential and are not permitted for public release.
