Mauricio Lara has been handed a two year suspension from boxing after failing a drugs test.
Lara is familiar on UK shores having fought Leigh Wood and Josh Warrington in huge shows, forming two epic rivalries.
His most recent ventures to Britain came in 2023 when he took on and defeated Wood in February 2023.
The pair then rematched three months later which saw the Nottingham native get his revenge by unanimous decision.
But it has been revealed that Lara tested positive for betamethasone in a UKAD test, following the sequel with Wood.
The substance is banned for use in competition by UKAD.
Lara’s reasoning for the positive test was claiming that it had entered his system via an injection in his shoulder.
But UKAD did not accept the explanation and suggested it was not a sufficient explanation for how it showed up on the test.
Lara has since offered no alternative reasoning for the failed test.
He will now be banned from the sport for two years, backdated from 7 March 2024, which will carry until March 2026.
The Mexican has fought three times on home soil since his second episode with Wood.
They included a controversial draw with Daniel Lugo, before back-to-back victories including in his last fight in January 2025.
Lara reigned as a world championGettyUKAD released a statement, which read: “Mexican professional boxer Mauricio Lara has been banned from all World Anti-Doping Code-compliant sport for two years, following Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) for the Presence and Use of a Prohibited Substance.”
Lara shot to notoriety globally having scored a stunning upset victory over Warrington in 2021.

He retained the world title after a draw saw Lara cut and forced toi pull out mid-fight after a clash of heads.
His two fights with Wood saw him become a WBA featherweight champion, before losing the belt before the rematch after missing weight.
Wood remains a popular British fighter and a real ticket-seller despite struggling for activity.
He will next face Anthony Cacace in a huge clash at super-featherweight on May 10 in Nottingham.
