4Reel Fishing: Old Man Winter will not go away

Russian River –  Now is the time to get back to the Russian. The water color is a greenish color. And, there are steelies in the river. Boy, this season has been a pretty good year when it comes to the pure numbers of steelhead salmon that have come all the way you in to our neck of the woods. The outlook for next year is to be even better.  It is kinda reminding of the “good old days .”  GO GET ‘UM, while the gettin’ is still good.

Blue Lakes – Trout Trout, trout.  The Upper Blue lake is fully stocked with trout.  Matter-in-fact, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is making sure that the kick off to this years Spring fishing season is going to be the best so far.  Once again this week, they stocked the lake with some beautiful rainbows.   HINT – The trout are hanging out where there is fresh water coming into the lake.  Look for the creeks and you will find more of the trout.

Clear Lake – The bass fishing has picked up on the number 5 Bass lake in California.   You know, the big thing as of late is fishing the Alabama/Calabama Rig (of which I am a big fan).  Well, the novelty has worn off some, and many anglers have returned to their go to baits; crank baits, swim baits, and drop shottin’.  As the water temperature continues to rise, the bass fishin’ will get better and better.  Soon the shallow waters in and around submersed tules will be loaded with bass looking to spawn.  The entire north side of the lake and from the State Park north to Lakeport are all very good areas to fish this time of year.

Lake Mendocino- Have seen it? Our hometown lake is looking pretty good.  The water level is just a few feet below the south parking lot and still rising.  Good News!  The bass spawning grounds that were dry are now under water once again.  Like Clear Lake, as the water temperature comes up the bass fishing will get better.  Right now a slower approach seems to be working the best.  Drop shottin’ and slow draggin’ a plastic worm, brush hog or sweet beaver will get you hooked up.

The word on the street is that Fish and Wildlife will once again stock our backyard lake with trout.   With that being said, the trout fishin’ has started to pick up..  The trout are scattered through out the lake.  A did hear that anglers are now catching them on the north end of the lake and up into the river channel.

Lake Pillsbury- Brrrr!  It is still winter up on the mountain lake.  The good news is, the lake is full . The word is that Fish and Wildlife will soon stock the lake with some nice trout.  Boy, as the days get a little bit warmer, the fishin’ up there will start to heat up.

Lake Sonoma- Finally some good fishin’ reports coming out of Lake Sonoma.  The fall and winter fishing has been pretty tough.  But, now the bass bite is back!  The main body hot spots are anywhere there are running creeks coming into the lake.  Also, Yorty, Cherry, and Skunk Creeks are holding Bass that are staged for spawning.  The Bass haven’t moved up far yet.  They are hanging out near submersed timber. Crank baits, spinner baits and drop-shottin’ are all working well.
